How can our sugarcane plastic packaging improve the world?
Most of us leave a significant plastic footprint on the earth. It has become a major problem worldwide. We hope you agree with us that this is not how we should express our gratitude to the earth — the place where we live, dream and love. So what are we doing about it at BioB?
Reusable packaging
Sugarcane plastic is a fantastic renewable resource that is fully recyclable in the same way as petroleum-based plastic. While sugarcane is grown, the plant produces oxygen for the world through its photosynthesis.
Why is sugarcane like a desert rose?
Sugarcane grows and thrives on land that cannot be used for other crops. At the same time, sugarcane converts CO2 into oxygen as it grows. Sugarcane is a renewable energy source – a biomass – that can be used for bioplastics. That’s why we use sugarcane for BioB’s packaging.
A renewable and sustainable source
Sugarcane plastic is a sustainable material used in the production of recyclable packaging material. Sugarcane plastic is considered an environmentally friendly material and is converted into bioethanol – a plant-based alcohol. This bioethanol can be used as a substitute for gasoline or to produce plastic that is molecularly identical to traditional plastic made from fossil fuels.
Sugarcane removes CO2 from the air
It is estimated that for every kilogram of sugarcane plastic produced, 3.09 kg of CO2 is removed from the air. While the plant grows, it requires nothing more than sun and rain. This plant is so simple that nature essentially receives more benefits than the plant itself receives during its growth.
As strong as fossil fuel plastic
But does sugarcane plastic have any disadvantages at all? Is it as strong and durable as fossil fuel plastic? The answer is that sugarcane plastic is an equally strong alternative, and no fundamental disadvantages have yet been found.
Sugarcane grows mainly in Brazil, approx. 2,000-2,500 km away from the Amazon rainforest. Sugarcane has a much higher yield than corn and grain and is therefore a very efficient raw material for the production of ethanol. Sugarcane plastic allows us to benefit from many advantages, without the significant disadvantages, compared to the use of conventional plastic.
